More Candy Experiments & a Giveaway

Two years ago, I stumbled across a fun website full of candy experiments that I could do with the kids to use up their Halloween candy. I wrote about some of our favorite candy activities and was contacted by their creator, Loralee Leavitt.  Now, Loralee has compiled a book with 70 exciting experiments to help kids use up their candy stash and I was thrilled when she contacted me to review it!

Candy Experiments is full of activities designed to engage children of all ages.  It includes easy experiments for preschoolers to grow things, dissolve things, and explode things and more complicated experiments for the older kids.  Each experiment includes step-by-step instructions and an easy to understand explanation of the science behind the "magic".

The vibrant pictures and bright colors immediately caught the attention of my 7-year-old and he couldn't wait to start trying them out.

After Trunk-or-Treating last weekend, we were eager to get started using up our candy.
My Daycare Kids loved watching our sour candy fizz.  We dissolved 2 teaspoons of baking soda into a bowl with 1/2 cup warm water.  Then we dropped warheads into our mixture and watched the fizzing fun.

We watched candy corn shed their skin like a snake in a small bowl of warm water.
We attempted to make a marshmallow submarine.  This didn't work for us, but we still had fun watching the colors swirl without blending and making predictions about which candies would float and which would sink...
And watching the M's rise to the surface like magic.

And for our grand finale, my husband helped our older boys explode soda with Mentos using diet soda, Mentos, and a Geyser Tube .

Loralee's book is filled with many, many more experiments including all the scientific explanations behind the candy magic.  She is offering one of our readers a free copy of the book, but in case you can't wait, you can find Candy Experiments online and in your local bookstore for $14.99 ($16.99 in Canada).  You can enter using the Rafflecopter form below.  Good luck and Happy Experimenting!!
