Pumpkin Letter Match

We have been using these quite a bit in the past week and I'm so excited to share them with you.  I'll be sharing some of the games we've done with these later this week, but today I wanted to show you how easy they were to put together.

I had been toying with the idea of creating another seasonal letter activity like our Broken Heart Letter matching and when I came across these foam pumpkins in the clearance section of Michael's, I knew the time had come.  This activity was so easy to put together.

We used:
Orange foam pumpkins
Wooden clothespins
green construction paper
black marker

I wrote a capital letter on each of the foam pumpkins,

Then, I cut simple leaf shapes out of the green construction paper.  I happened to use some scraps from our green sea turtles and folded them in half several times so I end up with several leaves for each cut.  I wrote a lower-case letter on each of the leaves.

I glued each of the leaves to a wooden clothespin and let them dry.

When my 5-year-old came home he was very excited to test out the new pumpkins.  We put them in alphabetical order and then he matched up all of the stems to the correct pumpkin.

He still gets his b's and d's mixed up so I've found that just giving him a few pumpkins with those letters in the bunch has been great practice for him.

This is also a great activity for building up little hand muscles that are important for writing. Tomorrow, I'll share some other ways we've been using these pumpkins.
