Shape Snowmen

Today we read Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner and used it as a lead in to our shape review craft.  This story is about a little boy who wonders why his snowman looks droopy the day after he makes him.  He imagines his snowman meeting his snowmen friends in the middle of the night and the fun they must have to make him look so disheveled the next morning.

After reading our story, I gave the kids materials to make their own snowman out of shapes.

We used:
3 white circles (2 large, 1 medium)
1 square red hat (any color could be substituted)
1 orange triangle nose
2 googly eyes
buttons
brown marker

Using their materials, the kids assembled their own snowmen on blue construction paper based on what they thought a snowman would look like from the story.  While they constructed their snowman, they told me stories of what their snowman would do at night.  Then, they wanted to use their sock snowmen to recreate the story.  I love it when their imaginations take over!
