Learning Shapes with Vehicles

Continuing with our transportation theme, my little guys have been exploring with shapes.  They had a great time creating different types of transportation and it was such an easy craft for my 2-year-old to get excited about.

We started by cutting out all sorts of shapes in different sizes and colors.  My 7-year-old (home for the Summer) was a huge help with this.  As we cut out shapes, my 2 and 3-year-old named the different colors and shapes for us.  They also did some sorting for me.

Then, the kids got to work making different vehicles.  We talked about how transportation is a way of moving people or things (goods).  At first I encouraged them to make vehicles with wheels like cars, trucks, or trains.  This quickly turned into them wanted to make boats and planes since we've been doing a lot of free play with our Chalk City and playing with boats in the Water Table.  My 7-year-old decided he wanted to make a rocket complete with fire exhaust.  This is a great activity because it lets them use what they are learning and create something that is all their own.  My 2-year-olds vehicle did not resemble any car or truck that I had ever seen but he could identify the shapes and tell me where the wheels, windows, and people were.  That's good enough for me!

Thanks for stopping by!  I'd love to hear from you in the comments and have you join us back again!

  1. What a fun idea. I love that this is so versatile, like you said, just adapt it to what you are currently learning about. I'll have to remember this when I am working on shapes with my two year old.

    1. Thanks for commenting! My boys have always loved these activities even at 2 when their shape creations didn't really resemble anything :) We've done snowmen, flowers, houses, school buses, and lots of other things. It's always so much fun to see their creativity!

  3. We made a shape garbage truck and shape fire truck for the first time this year, and it was great to see my kids use some creativity in how they put their trucks together, too. Love your ideas!

  5. What a great idea - I did a similar thing and made a train a while back but would love to see Miss Daisy give it a go now that she's a little older! Thanks for sharing! :)
