The school year has started back up, and with that comes a whole new dimension of "busy" for our household. This is a crazy time for families with only one or two children, but having five children and a handful of daycare kids means that we especially have to be on our game to keep things running smoothly!
This year, I've created two easy printables to help us keep track of our after-school schedule and the chores that need to be done throughout the week. My oldest boys are adding piano lessons to their schedule, which means we have to add piano practice to their evening schedule. They also play basketball and soccer throughout the year and participate in their weekly Bible Clubs. You can find links to these printables at the bottom of this post.
Our first hurdle in the after-school marathon is snack time. My kids come home from school starving and immediately want to raid the pantry for cookies and chips! I need them to have something more substantial to hold them through practices and homework until dinner. For a special treat, my kids love when we have Bagel Bites! In just a few minutes, I can have something hot and tasty on the table! Add in some fruit and they're sure to make it to dinner without complaining about empty tummies!
Bagel Bites are fun, quick and easy snacks, which makes them convenient for the after-school rush! With 0 grams of trans fat per serving, I can feel better knowing that I can read all of their ingredients and that they only use real Mozzarella, Cheddar, and Monterey Jack cheeses in their products. Of course, my kids don't care that the tomato sauce and bagel dough are made from scratch, they just love that they taste great and that they're the perfect size for snacking!
After everyone leaves, it's time for homework, Quiet Times (for Bible clubs), and piano practice. We try to mix it up and let the kids try new ways of practicing their spelling words and math facts. There are lots of websites that are great for this!
Once they're done with everything else, our kids have started picking one chore a day from our posted list. These chores are designed to only take a few minutes and be things that they can do independently. There are also things that I like to have done, but don't always have time to get to throughout the day. I put the list in a picture frame I had lying around so that the kids can use an Expo marker to cross of the chore they did. This ensures that they're not trying to do the same one every day!
We've been using our new signs for a few weeks now, and so far they are working great! The kids have a visual reminder of the things they need to do each evening and I'm getting some more help around the house without the constant nagging. I still need to remind my 6-year-old to check the chart for what he needs to do next, but I'm hopeful that he'll eventually remember on his own.
