Ocean and Beach Books for Preschoolers

As part of our Ocean Unit at Daycare, we've been exploring lots of Ocean and Beach books from our local library.
Ocean and Beach Books for Preschoolers - Mamas Like Me
Here are some of our favorites:

Commotion in the Ocean - This delightful collection of poems includes fun rhymes about the creatures who live in and around the ocean. Children will delight in the snappy poems and colorful illustrations about whales, walruses, penguins, stingrays and sharks.

Hooray for Fish! - Paddle along with Little Fish on a mesmerizing underwater tour of friends spotty and stripy, happy and gripy, hairy and scary, even curly whirly and twisty twirly.  Young children will love the bright colors and cheerful illustrations in this one!
My Visit to the Aquarium - This book follows a family as they travel through the many exhibits at the Aquarium.  The illustrations include adults and children from all different cultures and races, as the kids explore tidal pools, deep sea sharks, coral reefs, rainforests, fresh water lakes, and even take in a dolphin show!
I'm The Biggest Thing in the Ocean! - This simple book with bright illustrations highlights many different ocean animals as a giant squid travels through the ocean and discovers that he may not be the biggest thing in the ocean after all!

Mister Seahorse - This is a stunning new picture book from Eric Carle about Mister Seahorse and other 'male mothers', with special acetate pages that hide fish behind rocks and reeds. As he floats through the sea, Mister Seahorse meets a Mr Stickleback, Mr Tilapia, Mr Kurtus and many other fish fathers caring for their eggs and babies in the most surprising ways. This is a great book to show that it's not just the Mommies that care for their babies.
Wish for a Fish: All About Sea Creatures - This Cat in the Hat Learning Library book is great for learning lots of facts about the creatures in the ocean.  Traveling down from the Sunny Zone to the Dark Zone to the Trench at the bottom, Captain Cat and his crew get up close and personal with the different life forms found at each level of the ocean. Along the way, they meet sharks, jellyfish, dolphins, manatees, whales, and sea cucumbers, to name just a few!  We usually break this one down over a few sittings to keep the attention of our youngest listeners.

The Rainbow Fish - This award-winning book is about a beautiful, vain fish who lives deep in the ocean and learns to share to get friends.  It could be a great starting point for a beautiful collage fish art project!

Swimmy - Deep in the sea there lives a happy school of little fish. Their watery world is full of wonders, but there is also danger, and the little fish are afraid to come out of hiding . . . until Swimmy comes along. Swimmy shows his friends how—with ingenuity and team work—they can overcome any danger. With its graceful text and stunning artwork, this Caldecott Honor Book deserves a place on every child’s shelf.
Just Grandma and Me - Little Critter and his grandmother spend the day at the beach in this funny-and-true picture book about Mercer Mayer's popular character. Little Critter is a good helper, even at the beach. When his grandmother's hot dog falls in the sand, he washes it off in the ocean. He promises to blow up the inflatable seahorse but needs a little help in the end. The joys and mishaps of a special summer day with Grandma are all brightened by Little Critter's sunny disposition.
Ocean Day - This non-fiction text uses a young girl to introduce young readers to the natural treasures of the seashore, including sand dunes, driftwood, crashing waves, seashells, grasses and tide pools, in a work complemented by color photographs.  Perfect for preschool audiences!
