How to Be a Savvy Target Shopper with Cartwheel

Recently I joined the 21st century when my husband bought me my first smartphone.  Before then, I would have told you that I was perfectly content with my "dumb" phone.  I could text, make phone calls, and take photos (that I never did anything with).  Then, I discovered the world of apps and fell in love.  I'm particularly obsessed with money-saving apps, like Target Cartwheel, that let me use my phone to receive special deals and discounts on things I'm already buying!

I was recently given the opportunity to test out the Cartwheel app for a review and, of course, I love any opportunity for a Target trip.  I immediately downloaded the app and was impressed with how easy it was to navigate.  There are many things that I am still learning about my phone, but this app made it easy to find what I was looking for, browse, and select the deals I wanted to take advantage of.

What is Target Cartwheel?
The Cartwheel app works like an online coupon database that allows you to save money on your in-store purchases.  It can be used on your desktop, tablet, mobile web or iPhone and Droid apps.

How Does Target Cartwheel Work?
You can browse deals by category, scroll through the over 700 options, or scan an item barcode in the store using the app on your IPhone or Droid native apps to see if there is a Cartwheel offer on it.  Simply click on your deal to add it to your Cartwheel list.  When you check out, click on "my Cartwheel" and the app will generate a single barcode on your phone for your cashier to scan.  This barcode works just like a personalized coupon for all your deals, no clipping required!

Signing Up for Target Cartwheel
When signing up with Target Cartwheel on your smartphone, you can choose to use your Target.com login or your Facebook connection.  I chose to sign-up using my Facebook connection.  At first, I was worried that this would mean sharing everything that I purchased with my friends, but it's easy to hide this information by clicking to keep your individual coupons private or simply not allowing the app to post on your behalf.  This is great if you're buying a gift or if you happen to be buying "personal" items that not everyone needs to know about.  I loved this feature because it immediately let me see what deals my friends with children were taking advantage of.  With over 700 offers, it can be a bit overwhelming to simply scroll through all of them.

How to Make Target Cartwheel Work for Busy Moms?
We are all busy!  I have never been the type who could sit down with a coupon insert and browse through for deals I might use.  This app is no different.  I simply don't have time to browse through every offer, so how can we use this to save time and money?

For each shopping trip, I make a list of things I know we need to get.  This keeps me focused when shopping with 4 boys and makes sure that I won't forget something important, like toilet paper or dish detergent.  Then, before going to the store, I browse through the corresponding categories and find any offers that are already on my list.  That way, I don't need to worry about finding them at the store.
 photo TargetCartwheelTips4_zps3778ab1f.jpg

For this trip, I next looked through the Target coupons on their website to see if there were any coupons that I also had Cartwheel deals on.  In this case, I was able to stack a Target coupon and a Cartwheel deal on Neutragena lip gloss saving me even more money!  You can even combine them with manufacturer coupons (for those coupon divas out there)!

At the store, I realized that I also wanted to get some sippy cups, so I browsed through the "baby feeding" offers right there in the aisle and found a deal on Playtex cups, which also happened to be on sale.  I quickly added those to my offers list and moved on to the next thing on my list.

One of the best features is the ability to scan the barcode of any item to see if there is a Cartwheel offer for it.  This is probably the fastest way to find offers for those who don't want to browse or search for items ahead of time.  Simply scan your items right before checking out, add any that apply, and then show your personalized barcode to your cashier for immediate savings!

Are There Limits to Target Cartwheel?
Yes - sort of.  When you first sign up for Target Cartwheel, you have 10 offer spots that you can use each trip.  You can earn badges to get more offer spots by reaching savings milestones, interacting with the app by adding offers, and through social media sharing.

You can use each Target Cartwheel offer 4 times per transaction.  That means that if I find a great deal on a box of K-cups, I can buy 4 boxes in my first transaction.  Then, Target will let me come back up to 6 times that day to buy more, giving me up to 24 boxes of K-cups from that deal until it expires.

Target has always been one of my favorite places to shop.  I love their selection and their prices.  Now, with my new Target Cartwheel app, I have one more money-saving reason to shop there!
