My Newest Trick for Saving Money on Laundry

I am always on the look out for ways that I can save money for our family and reduce the number of consumer products and chemicals that we purchase.  In addition to homemade laundry detergent and homemade cleaners, I recently saw on Pinterest that you could use aluminum foil in place of dryer sheets.

At first, I was a bit skeptical.  After all, I know you're not supposed to put foil in microwaves so it only made sense to me that putting it in a dryer would be a bad idea - shows you how much I know!  After doing some internet research, I was reasonably sure that using foil wouldn't cause the dryer to blow up so I decided to give it a try.

Two weeks later, I am a convert.  Now, I know that two weeks may not sound like a long time, but I actually do more laundry in 2 weeks than most people do in 2 MONTHS.  I now have two aluminum foil balls, about 2 inches in diameter, that I rotate through the laundry.  That way if one of them gets lost in the laundry basket, I can go ahead and start drying the next load while I fold one basket.

Best of all, I don't have to worry about residue from the dryer sheets making my cloth diapers less absorbent.  I'm saving money and reducing the need for diaper-stripping!  It's a win-win in my world!

What other tips have you found on Pinterest (or online) that have changed the way you do things?

  1. I've never heard of this! I hate those sheets, I always feel the residue on my hands as I fold afterwards.
