Snowflakes for Sandy Hook Elementary

It seems like this holiday season has brought with it tragedy and sadness from all sides. We've had so many friends and family suffer losses, and it seems especially hard right before Christmas.  A few days ago, I participated in an activity that brought tears to my eyes.  With all of my daycare kids home from school for the holidays, we made coffee filter snowflakes as part of the national push to decorate the new Sandy Hook Elementary in a Winter Wonderland.  Children from around the country are creating unique snowflakes in an attempt to bring some joy and comfort to a community that has lost so much.

In our case, only the oldest children truly knew why they were making the snowflakes.  With the younger kids, I told them that we were sending them to students who were sad because they had to move to a new school and that we wanted to help decorate their new school to make them happy.  I wish you could have seen how diligently they worked to create the most beautiful snowflakes they could for these children.  They didn't need to know exactly why the kids were sad, it was enough to know that there were children that were sad and that they could help make them happy.

Our coffee filter snowflakes were decorated with glitter glue and laid to dry around my kitchen.  Many times throughout the day I found myself tearing up as I looked at those little snowflakes and was reminded again at how lucky I am that my children were home safe with me.

Right now our snowflakes are on their way to Connecticut.  I encourage everyone to participate and send their snowflakes to the Connecticut PTA by January 12th:
