M&M Cookie Brownies

Rainy days always call for baking around here. Not only does it result in some yummy treats for the kids when they get home from school, but it gives the younger kids a chance to practice counting and measuring!! gives me another reason to succumb to my pregnancy cravings :) Yesterday, we tried out a new combination of cookie and brownie and ended up with this amazing concoction. Needless to say they were a huge hit! You could easily adapt these to any holiday with some festive M&M's.

3/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1 cup M&M's minis (we used regular ones since that's what we had on hand)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Grease 13x9 pan; set aside.
3. In large bowl, cream 3/4 cup butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla.
4. In medium bowl, combine 2 1/4 cups flour, baking powder and salt; blend into creamed mixture.
5. Divide the batter in half. Blend together cocoa powder and melted butter; stir into one half of the dough. Spread cocoa dough evenly into prepared baking pan.
6. Stir remaining 1/4 cup flour and 1/2 cup M&M's into remaining dough; spread evenly over cocoa dough in pan.
7. Sprinkle with remaining M&M's.
8. Bake 25-30 minutes until edges start to pull away from the sides of the pan. Cool completely. Cut into bars and store in a tightly covered container.
