Mommy Reflections: Things You Shouldn't Say to a Pregnant Woman

My husband and I recently announced to our friends and family that we're expecting our fourth child. Now, maybe it's just the hormones, but there are things you shouldn't say to a pregnant woman announcing her big news (even if her youngest child isn't a year old yet!). And, since this is my own little corner of the blogosphere, I figured I'd share my rantings with you :)

In no particular order, here is my list of things you shouldn't say to a pregnant woman:

1. Are you crazy? -I'm not sure that this is ever an appropriate response to any announcement.

2.  You do know how that happens, right? - Yes, (obviously) and we (obviously) like it.

3.  You guys need a hobby...t.v...bigger t.v.....cable...  We have hobbies and a t.v.  We just like spending time with each other more.

4.  Was this planned?  I like my husband's response to this:  "Yes, we planned to have 'relations' knowing exactly where babies come from (see #2), so 'yes' this was planned".

5.  Better you than me - Yes, you've made your feelings on babies very clear.  I'm glad that I'm the one that's pregnant and not you, as well.

Now, of course, I'd never really respond this way.  I just smile and nod and thank God for my little blessing!

So, the next time someone tells you that they're pregnant and you're tempted to say something like this (unless you're VERY close to that person), please just do us all a favor and stick with "Congratulations!".

What silly things have well-meaning friends and family said to you in response to your big news?

  1. Congratulations! I'm so excited for you and your new blessing.:)

  2. So exciting, love the list :) especially #3, it's so great to have a husband you love

  3. Thanks ladies! We're very excited :)

  4. Congrats! Now, on to the list I seriously can relate. We had our two very close together. We planned it that way but boy did people have a lot to say. I think it is just plain rude and after awhile I said so. :)

  5. My MIL took me to the doctor this week. We are at 35 weeks and the doctor wanted to do an ultrasound because she was scared the baby wasn't growing. When I told my MIL the reason the appt. took so long she said "Really?! What would make her think that you're huge." I've gained 8 lbs. Needless to say, I won't need her to take me to the dr. ever again!
