Mommy Reflections: More Precious Than Diamonds

This morning started out with my 5-year-old dropping one of my diamond stud earrings down the sink and then proceeding to brush his teeth.  He came out of the bathroom in tears and knew that he had done something wrong.  You see, I loved those earrings.  Not because of their value, in fact, I'm not even sure what they cost.  They were a gift from my mother-in-law and had been her's for a very long time.  I love sentimental things like that!  It meant so much that she wanted me to have them and I have to admit that I was very upset that they were gone.  Thankfully, even in my sleep-deprived state, I still remembered that my little boy was very upset about this accident.  I didn't yell - I didn't cry.  I just hugged him and then we went to check the sink.  As I feared, my earring was long gone.  We did discuss that if something like this ever happens again, he should come get Mommy right away and not run water.  And then I hugged him again and sent him off to school.

After he left, I was still sad about my earring...and then, I got a little perspective.  This may sound melodramatic to some of you, but I have friends and family with children who are battling cancer.  In fact, one of the girls I went to high school with blogs about her daughter's battle at The Toughest Girl I Know.  It is truly an inspiring blog and has brought me to tears more times than I can count.  Praise God, it has a happy ending (although, I'm not sure if she's gotten that far in her posting).  So, what if, instead of an earring, it had been my son that I was in danger of losing?  What if he had an accident?  What if we discovered an illness more serious than the common cold?  All of a sudden, my earring didn't seem that important.  There is nothing more precious to me than my children - and when my little boy gets home from school today, I'll thank him for reminding me of that!
