Taking the Plunge Into Cloth

In our effort to "Go Green & Save Green", our family took the plunge a little over a year ago and switched to cloth diapers. By far, it has been the single biggest change we've made both environmentally and financially. I won't pretend to be an expert on cloth diapers. There are lots of sites that can help you make cost comparisons and discuss the different types of diapers, but I can tell you why we made the switch.

1. Saving Money - Yes, there are tons of reasons to try cloth diapers, but this was the single greatest factor in our decision. Having diapered one child in disposables and knowing that we were going to have more, I was very open to anything that might help us save money on diapers. There is an up-front cost with cloth diapering, but that doesn't have to be a huge expense either. Flats and covers are really your cheapest option (and I've found them to be one of my favorite options for small babies). I've been fortunate to receive cloth diapers as gifts, won a few in giveaways, and was fortunate to be able to trade a day of babysitting for a large stash. I know everyone doesn't always have these options, but you'd be surprised at what you can find at consignment shops and on Craigslist and other online diaper swapping sites.

2. A Healthier Alternative for Your Babies Bum - I never had a problem with diaper rash with my oldest son who was in disposables, but my middle son battled rashes constantly. After switching to cloth, we did notice a marked improvement. There were still times when we had to use a liner and break out the creams, but those were much less severe cases. With our youngest, who has always been in cloth, we've never had an instance of diaper rash. I won't get into the studies on all the chemicals found in disposables, but if you're struggling with diaper rash, it may be worth trying out cloth to see if it will help your child's condition.

3. Better for the Environment - I'm a little embarrassed to say that this was probably the least important in my considerations, but it is nice to know that I'm doing my part to help the environment and remove some of those disposables from the landfills.

4. The Cuteness Factor - I didn't put much stock in this before I was using cloth diapers, but they are adorable. And there's something addicting about being able to coordinate a diaper with an outfit!

  1. We bought 24 Bum Genius diapers for our kiddo before he was born- at almost 2 years old, they are still going strong! I don't know what we'd do without them... besides be broke.
