Learning Lower-Case Letters Game - Great for Boys!

Boys love to move! This really isn't a surprise to anyone, so when teaching boys, you have to meet them where they are and cater to their style of learning. Typically, active games and kinesthetic activities will appeal to boys (and many girls for that matter).

Lately, we've been working with Little Brother on his lower-case letters. I love this game, because it gets him moving, uses what we already have at home, and requires very little prep work.

To play this matching game, you'll need:
Post-it notes
An ABC poster or floor mat (We used our foam floor mat, but a poster on the Wall would work as well)

1. Before playing, write the one lower case letter on each of the sticky notes.

2. Hand your child a letter and have them name the letter.  Then, have them run over to the mat and find the capital that it matches. (In the beginning, it's best to start with letters that look the same, or similar, in their capital and lower-case forms. ie. s,p,c,j,k,m,w,x,z,o,u,v,) Also, if your child is just starting with their lower-case letters, you will want to pick just a few to work on at a time. This is when playing with the mat comes in handy because you can pull out the ones you want. Of course, you could always just write the capitals on a piece of paper and tape it to the wall instead :)

Variations: As your child gets better at matching up the letters, you can time them to see how fast they can go and then see if they can beat that time. Two kids could also race each other or race the clock if you worry about competition.

This has become a favorite game in our house, and I often catch Little Brother (and sometimes Big Brother) working together to put their post-its on the ABC mat!
